KING ARTHUR

Historians agree that the classical 15th century tale of King Arthur and his Knights rose from a real hero who lived a thousand years earlier in a period often called the Dark Ages.

Recently discovered archeological evidence sheds light on his true identity.


LANCELOT (voiceover)
By 300 AD, the Roman Empire extended from Arabia to Britain.
But they wanted more.
More land. More people's loyalty and subservient to Rome. But no people so important as the powerful Sarmatians to the east.

Thousands died in that field. And when the smoke cleared on the fourth day, the only Sarmatian soldiers left alive were members of the decimated but legendary cavalry.
The Romans, impressed by their bravery and horsemanship, spared their lives.


452AD

In exchange, these warriors were incorporated into the Roman military.

[YOUNG LANCELOT RIDES ACROSS A GRASSY PLAIN]

Better they had died that day...


[YOUNG LANCELOT CONTINUES TO RIDE, UPON ARRIVING AT HIS VILLAGE, DISMOUNTS HORSE]

YOUNG LANCELOT
(distantly) Father!
(approaches) Father... they are here.

LANCELOT (voiceover)
For the second part of the bargain they struck, indebted not only themselves...


LANCELOT’S FATHER
The day has come.

LANCELOT (voiceover)
... but also their sons. And their sons and so on, to serve the Roman Empire as Knights.

LANCELOT (still voicing)
I was such a son.

LANCELOT’S FATHER
(patting horse’s muzzle) There is a legend that fallen knights return as great horses.
He has seen what awaits you, and he will protect you.

LANCELOT’S SISTER(?)
(running out) Lancelot! (handing YOUNG LANCELOT something) Lancelot.


[YOUNG LANCELOT TAKES IT AND EXAMINES THE CARVED RAT NECKLACE]
[HE LOOKS AROUND AT EVERYONE’S WORRIED/SAD FACES]


YOUNG LANCELOT
Don't be afraid. I will return.

[YOUNG LANCELOT TURNS TO LEAVE, AND RIDES TOWARDS HIS ROMAN OFFICER]

YOUNG LANCELOT
How long shall we be gone?

ROMAN OFFICER (harshly)
Fifteen years. Not including the months it’ll take to get to your post.

LANCELOT'S FATHER (somewhat wistful)
(pauses) Lancelot!
... RAAAAWWWRRR!!!!!!!!


EVERYONE ELSE:
(Lancelot’s daddy is so cool, so we shall follow suit as well!)

[EVERYONE RAISES THEIR ARMS TO CHEER FOR LANCELOT]
[YOUNG LANCELOT LOOKS BACK ONE LAST TIME AND RIDES OFF INTO THE DISTANCE]


LANCELOT (voiceover)
Our post was Britain – or at least the southern half. For the land was divided by a seventy-three mile wall, built three centuries before us, to protect the empire from the native fighters of the North.
So, as our forefathers have done, we made our way and reported to our Roman commander in Britain – ancestrally named for the first, Artorius – or, Arthur.



15 YEARS LATER

[FLYING ZOOM ON SIX KNIGHTS AND ARTHUR RIDING ACROSS THE PLAINS]
[THEY STOP ON A RAISED HILL AND LOOK OUT INTO THE DISTANCE]


GAWAIN
(sighs) As promised – the Bishop’s carriage.

GALAHAD
(excited, glancing over at the other knights)
Our freedom, Bors.

BORS
(thoughtful) Mmm... I can almost taste it. (low chuckling)

GAWAIN
Your passage to Rome, Arthur.

[ARTHUR WATCHES THE BISHOP’S CARRIAGE AND HIS ROMAN SOLDIERS BELOW]
[EVERYTHING IS VERY QUIET, SETTING IS SOMEWHAT FOGGY, THERE ARE NATIVE WOADS HIDING ALL AROUND THEM IN THE WOODS AND NEAR THE RIVERBEDS]

[WOAD FIGHTER SUDDENLY SHOOTS A ROMAN SOLDIER OFF HIS HORSE]
[WOADS CHARGE INTO BATTLE]

RANDOM ROMAN SOLDIER
(draws sword)

TRISTAN
(alert) Woads!

[KNIGHTS RIDE ACROSS THE PLAIN TO CHARGE INTO BATTLE, IN ‘V’ FORMATION]

(insert incoherent yelling here) (waves tongue out at retreating Woads)

(approaches the Bishop’s carriage and sees an arrow has struck through his chest)

[GAWAIN AND BORS STARE WITH A BIT OF DISBELIEF AT THE DEAD MAN IN THE CARRIAGE]

BISHOP’S AIDE (hiding under the carriage)
(panic-stricken, fear-ridden chants in Latin)

GAWAIN
(stabs his knives angrily into the ground) (sits down and notices the BISHOP’S AIDE)
(panting) Save your prayers, boy. Your God doesn’t live here.

[ROMAN KNIGHT STABS RANDOM WOAD]

[INSERT MORE FIGHTING NOISES]
[A WOAD WARRIOR WIELDING AN AXE CHARGES AT ARTHUR, ARTHUR POINTS EXCALIBUR AT HIS NECK]

ARTHUR (angrily)
Why did Merlin send you south of the wall?

WOAD WARRIOR
(In native language)
Spill my blood with Excalibur and... (lifting neck) make this ground holy.

ARTHUR
Pick it up.

[NO RESPONSE]

ARTHUR (slowly)
Pick it up.

[WOAD WARRIOR SLOWLY PICKS UP HIS AXE]
[ARTHUR LOOKS INTO THE DISTANCE SUSPICIOUSLY; MERLIN IS WATCHING THE SCENE]
[ARTHUR LEAVES THE WOAD WARRIOR TO LIVE]

ARTHUR
Bors.

BORS
(pointing at the bishop’s carriage) What a bloody mess.

ARTHUR
(looking at the man in the carriage) That’s not the bishop.

BISHOP’S AIDE
(scared as hell) God help us. What are they?

BORS
Blue demons who eat Christians alive – you’re not a Christian, are you!?

[BISHOP’S AIDE PUTS HANDS TOGETHER LIKE FOR PRAYER AND WHIMPERS]

BORS
(imitating prayer) Does this... really work?
(mumbles) Nothing... maybe I’m not doing it right...

BISHOP (dressed as Roman Knight)
Arthur! Arthur Castus. Your father’s image. I haven’t seen you since childhood.

ARTHUR
Bishop Germanius. Welcome to Britain.
I see your military skills are still of use to you. Your device worked.

BISHOP
Ancient tricks, (laughs) for an ancient dog.
And these are the brave Sarmatian knights we have heard so much of in Rome.
(dismounts horse)
I thought the Woads control the north of Hadrian’s Wall.

ARTHUR
They do, but they occasionally venture south. Rome’s anticipated withdrawal from Britain has only increased their daring.

BISHOP’S AIDE (offscreen)
Woads?

GAWAIN
British rebels who hate Rome.

GALAHAD (obnoxiously)
Men who want their country back.

BISHOP
Who leads them?

LANCELOT
He’s called Merlin. A dark magician, some say.

ARTHUR
Tristan, ride ahead and make sure the road is clear.
[TRISTAN LEAVES]
Please do not worry, Bishop. We will protect you.

BISHOP
I have no doubt, commander. No doubt...

(eerie music)
(Merlin watches)

BISHOP’S AIDE
(muttering) Dozens don’t worry me nearly so much as thousands
(is shut out from the carriage)

LANCELOT
(menacingly) Thousands?

[THEY RIDE UP TO A HILL TO WATCH OVER THE BISHOP’S CARRIAGE ENTERING THE VICINITY OF HADRIAN’S WALL]

BORS
Well now that we’re free men, I’m gonna drink ‘till I can’t piss straight.

GAWAIN
(looking out) You do that every night.

BORS
I never could piss straight. Too much of myself to handle. Down there.

[HORSE NEIGHS]

BORS
Well it’s a problem! No really, it is. It’s a problem.
It’s like-


KNIGHTS (together in unison)
A baby’s arm holdin’ an apple.

[KNIGHTS LAUGH]
[THEY RIDE TOWARDS THE WALL]

GALAHAD
I don't like it. Rome. He's here to discharge us, why doesn't he just give us our papers?

GAWAIN
Is this your happy face? (laughs)

[GALAHAD GRINS]


GAWAIN
Galahad, do you still not know the Romans? They don't scratch their asses without holding a ceremony.

BORS
Why don't ye just kill him, and then discharge yourself after?

GALAHAD
I don't kill for pleasure. Unlike some.

TRISTAN
(interested) Well, you should try it someday; you might get a taste for it.

[GAWAIN LAUGHS]

BORS
It's part of you. It's in yer blood.

GALAHAD
N-no-no. (half-laughing) No. As of tomorrow, this was all just a bad memory.

BORS
(mouthing) Oh....

GAWAIN
I’ve often thought what going home would mean after all this. What will I do?
It's different for Galahad. I have been in this life longer than the other. So much for home – it’s not so clear in my memory.

BORS
Well, you speak for yerself- it’s cold back there. And everybody I know is dead and buried. Besides, I have, I think, a dozen children.

GAWAIN
Eleven.

BORS
You listen, when the Romans leave here, we’ll have the run of all this place. I’ll be... governor of my own village, and Dagonet will be my personal guard and royal arse-kisser, won’t you, Dag?

DAGONET
(looks away)

GAWAIN
First thing I will do when I get home is to find myself a beautiful Sarmatian woman to wed.

BORS
A beautiful Sarmatian woman? Why do you think we left in the first place?

[GAWAIN SCOFFS, BORS MOOS LOUDLY]
[KNIGHTS LAUGH]

BORS
What about you, Lancelot? What are you plans for home?

LANCELOT
Well if this woman of Gawain’s is as beautiful as he claims, I expect to be spending a lot of time at Gawain’s house. His wife will welcome the company.

GAWAIN
I see. Then what will I be doing?

LANCELOT
Wondering at your good fortune that all your children look like me.
(BORS laughs)

GAWAIN (muttering)
Is that before or after I hit you with my axe?
(Bors continues to laugh)

TRISTAN
(whistles for his hawk, hawk lands on his left arm)
Where you been, eh? Where you been?

LANCELOT
(rides up with Arthur) What will you do, Arthur, when you return to your beloved Rome?

ARTHUR
Give thanks to God that I survived to see it.

LANCELOT
(smiling) You and your God. You disturb me.

ARTHUR
I want peace, Lancelot. I’ve had enough. You should visit me.

LANCELOT
Tah. (looking away)

ARTHUR
It’s a magnificent place, Rome. (rare smile)
Ordered, civilized, advanced-

LANCELOT
A breeding ground of arrogant fools?

ARTHUR
The greatest minds of all the land have come together in one sacred place to help make mankind free. (actually smiling)

LANCELOT
...And the women?

[ARTHUR AND LANCELOT BOTH LAUGH AS THEY ALL ENTER BEHIND THE WALL]





[MEN SHOUTING TO OPEN THE GATE FOR THE KNIGHTS AND BISHOP’S CARRIAGE]
[A CROWD GATHERS TO SEE THE COMMOTION]

JOLS
Welcome back, Arthur.

ARTHUR
Jols.

JOLS
(nodding at Lancelot) Lancelot.

[KNIGHTS DISMOUNT]

ARTHUR
Bishop, please, my quarters have been made available to you.

BISHOP
Ah, yes. I must rest.

VANORA
(slaps Bors) Where’ve you been? I’ve been waiting for you!

BORS
(groaning) Oh, my little fire... such passion.
(aggressive kissing)
(suddenly breaking) Where’s my Gilly? (picks up boy)
Gilly. You’ve been fighting.

GILLY
Yes.

BORS
You’ve been winning.

GILLY
Yes.

BORS
That’s my boy. Come on, all my other bastards!

CHILDREN
Yay!





[CUT TO BISHOP IN ARTHUR’S QUARTERS, RUMMAGING THROUGH HIS STUFF. HE SEES A COIN WITH PELAGIUS’ FACE ON IT.]

BISHOP
(fingering coin) Pelagius...

BISHOP’S AIDE
(making the bed) Very kind of Arthur to give up his room. But of course, it is to be expected.

BISHOP
(looks at the coin some more)
(nonchalantly drops it behind him and it smashes)

[KNOCKING ON DOOR]
[ENTER JOLS]

JOLS
Sir. I’m here to escort you to the fortress hall.

[BISHOP EXITS]

BISHOP’S AIDE
(picks up a box) (to JOLS)
When my Master meets with your knights, he must be seated last and he must be seated at the head of the table.

JOLS
Your Master can plop his holy arse wherever he chooses. (faint smile)

[SOUNDS OF KNIGHTS LAUGHING AS BISHOP’S AIDE ENTERS; HE LOOKS SLIGHTLY BEWILDERED AT THE ROUND DONUT-SHAPED TABLE]

BISHOP’S AIDE
His Eminence, Bishop Gnaeus Germanius.

[BISHOP ENTERS]
[KNIGHTS RISE TO MEET HIM]
[BISHOP LOOKS VERY ASTONISHED AT THE ROUND TABLE]

BISHOP’S AIDE
A round table? What sort of evil is this?

JOLS
Arthur says for men to be men, they must first all be equal.

BISHOP
I was given to understand that there would be more of you.

ARTHUR
There were. We have been fighting here for fifteen years, Bishop.

BISHOP
Of course. (lifting cups out of a platter)
Arthur and his knights have served with courage to maintain the honor of Rome’s empire on this last outpost of our glory. Rome is most indebted. To you, noble knights, your final days as servants to the Empire.

LANCELOT
(looking up from his cup) Day. Not days.

[BISHOP SMILES BACK]
[KNIGHTS SIT BACK DOWN]

BISHOP
The Pope’s taken a personal interest in you. He inquires after each of you, and is curious to know if your knights have converted toward our Savior, or-

ARTHUR
They retain the religion of their forefathers. I’ve never questioned that.

BISHOP
Oh-of course, of course. They are pagans.

[GALAHAD AND OTHER KNIGHTS SHIFT SOMEWHAT UNEASILY]

BISHOP
For our part, the church has deemed such beliefs innocence.
But you, Arthur. Your path to God is through Pelagius? I saw his image in your room.

ARTHUR
He took my father’s place for me. His teachings on free will and equality have been of great influence.
I look forward to our reunion in Rome.

BISHOP
Ah- Rome awaits your arrival with great anticipation! You are a hero.
In Rome, you will live out your days in honor. And wealth.

[LANCELOT LOOKS AWAY, DISGUSTED]

BISHOP
Alas. (sighs) Alas, we are all but players in an ever-changing world. Barbarians from every corner are almost at Rome’s door.

[BISHOP’S AIDE PLACES BOX WITH DISCHARGE PAPERS AT BISHOP’S SIDE]

BISHOP
Because of this, Rome, and the Holy Father, has decided to remove ourselves from indefensible outposts, such as Britain.

[KNIGHTS ALL SLOWLY STAND IN PROTEST]

BISHOP
What will become of Britain is not our concern anymore.
I suppose the Saxons will claim it soon. (opening box)

ARTHUR
Saxons?

BISHOP
Yes. In the north, a massive Saxon incursion has begun.

LANCELOT
Saxons only claim what they kill.

GAWAIN
And only kill everything.

GALAHAD
So you’ll just... leave the land to the Woads. I risked my life for nothing.

BISHOP
(strenuous smile) Gentlemen.
Your discharge papers with safe conduct throughout the Roman Empire.
But first, I must have a word with your commander.

[KNIGHTS STILL STANDING AND WATCHING]

BISHOP
(sitting down) In private.

ARTHUR
(looking around) We have no secrets.

[LOUD BANG]

LANCELOT
Come. Let’s leave Roman business to Romans. (takes a sip from his goblet)

DAGONET
(patting Bors on the shoulder) Let it go, Bors.

[OTHER KNIGHTS FOLLOW LANCELOT OUT]
[BISHOP SMIRKS]

BISHOP
Rome has issued a final order for you and your men.

ARTHUR
Final order?

BISHOP
You are to travel north to rescue the family of Marius Honorius and return in particular with Marius’ son, Alecto.
Alecto is the Pope’s favorite godchild and pupil. It is his destiny to become a Bishop. Perhaps even Pope, one day.

ARTHUR
On this day. You ask this of my men, on this day?

[ARTHUR STANDS AND STARTS PACING AROUND]
ARTHUR
They have risked their lives for fifteen years for a cause not of their own - and now, on the day they are to be liberated, you send them on a mission that is far more dangerous than any other they have undertaken.
You tell me, Bishop. How do I go to my men and tell them instead of freedom, I offer death?

BISHOP
If your men truly are the knights of legend, perhaps some will survive. If it is God’s will.
Your men want to go home. And to get home, they need to cross the entire breadth of the Roman Empire.
Deserters would be hunted down like dogs.
Will you defy the Pope, Arthur? Rome? God Himself?

ARTHUR
Everything I’ve done has been for the Church and for Rome. Do not mistake a loyal soldier for a fool, Germanius.

[BISHOP STANDS]

BISHOP
Would you leave a defenseless Roman boy, destined to lead our Church, at the hands of the Saxons!?
Fulfill this mission, and your men will receive their discharge.
Their papers will be waiting here the moment they return.
(packs the box and prepares to leave)
You have my word.

ARTHUR
You think very hard upon our vow, Bishop, for I will hold you to it.
(BISHOP stops and turns around to face ARTHUR)
Break it, and no Roman legion, papal army, nor God Himself will protect you.
That is my word.





[HAPPY FESTIVE MUSIC OF KNIGHTS AT A BAR]
[GAWAIN CHUCKS A KNIFE AT A BOARD AND IT LANDS NEAR THE TOP. HE LAUGHS AND SO DOES GALAHAD]

[LANCELOT PULLS HER SO THAT SHE SITS ON HIS LAP. VANORA ROLLS HER EYES]
LANCELOT
When are you going to leave Bors and come home with me, huh? (tries to kiss her neck)

VANORA
(slaps Lancelot)
(through gritted teeth) My lover is watching you.


[LANCELOT LOOKS BACK AND LAUGHS AT BORS]
[BORS LOOKS DOWN AT HIS BABY, WHO SEEMS TO LAUGH AT HIM BUT IS ACTUALLY CRYING]

BORS
... you look nothing like him. You’re all Bors.

[GALAHAD CHUCKS A KNIFE AT THE BOARD, IT LANDS RELATIVELY IN THE CENTER]
[GAWAIN BLOWS A RASPBERRY]
[TRISTAN COMES UP BEHIND GALAHAD AND THROWS A KNIFE ON THE BOARD. KNIFE LANDS ON TOP OF GALAHAD’S]

GALAHAD
Tristran.

GAWAIN
How do you do that?

TRISTAN
(pointing with an apple in hand) I aim for the middle.

[CUT TO VANORA]

VANORA
Ugh, they want more.

BORS
Here. Be a mother to your son.
(kisses baby on the head and gives him to Vanora)
Dagonet, where’ve you been? We got plans to make.

[DAGONET DRINKS]

BORS
Here please. Sing.

VANORA
No!

BORS
It’s a last-

VANORA
No!

BORS
Come on-

VANORA
I’m trying to work-

BORS
(pulling her forward) SHUT UP!
Vanora will sing.

(nervous laughing)

RUUUUUUUUUUS! (or whatever it is he says)

[LANCELOT LOOKS AT ARTHUR SKEPTICALLY]

ARTHUR
Knights. Brothers in arms.
Your courage has been tested beyond all limits, but I must ask you now for one further trial.

BORS
(drinking imaginary beer) Drink.

[GALAHAD LAUGHS]

ARTHUR
We must leave on a final mission for Rome before our freedom can be granted.

[KNIGHTS LAUGH, THINKING IT IS A JOKE]

ARTHUR
Above the wall, there lies a Roman family in need of rescue. They are trapped by Saxons.
Our orders are to secure their safety.

BORS
Let the Romans take care of their own.

GAWAIN
(rather drunk) Above the wall is Woad territory.

GALAHAD
Our duty to Rome, if it was ever a duty, is done. Our pact with Rome is done.

BORS
Every knight here has laid his life on the line for you. (points) For you.
And instead of freedom, you want more blood? Our blood!?
You think more of Roman blood than you do ours?!

ARTHUR
Bors, these are our orders. We leave at first light and when we return, your freedom will be waiting for you. A freedom we can embrace with-

BORS
I’m a free man! I will choose my own fate!

[BABY CRYING IN THE BACKGROUND]

TRISTAN
Yeah yeah, we’re all going to die someday. If it’s death by a Saxon hand that frightens you – stay home.

GALAHAD
Well if you’re so eager to die, you can die right here!

LANCELOT
(trying to stop Galahad from hurting Tristan) Enough, enough-

GALAHAD
I’ve got something to live for!

DAGONET
The Romans have broken their word.
We have the word of Arthur. That is good enough. I’ll prepare.
(starting to walk off)
Bors, you coming?

BORS
Of course I’m coming! Can’t let you go on your own; you’ll all get killed!

[TRISTAN FOLLOWS DAGONET TO GO PACK]

BORS
I’m just saying what you’re all thinking!
(quietly) Vanora'll kill me.


ARTHUR
And you, Gawain?

GAWAIN
(sighs, then nods) I’m with you.
(looks at the reluctant GALAHAD) Galahad as well.

[GALAHAD STARES AT GAWAIN IN ASTONISHMENT BUT SAYS NOTHING]
[GALAHAD LAUGHS IN DISBELIEF, TAKES HIS BOTTLE OF WINE HE WAS DRINKING OUT OF, TIPS IT UPSIDE DOWN, LETS ALL THE WINE DRIP ONTO THE GROUND, THEN THROWS THE BOTTLE ONTO THE GROUND]
[BOTTLE SHATTERS]

[GAWAIN AND GALAHAD LEAVE]

(reporting to Arthur) They have flanked us to the east; they’re coming from the south, trying to cut off our escape.
(out of breath) They'll be here before nightfall.

ARTHUR
And the only way out is to the south?

TRISTAN (shaking head)

It means we'll have to cross behind the Saxon lines, if that's the road we shall take. (catching breath)

ARTHUR (sternly)
(grabbing MARIUS) Perhaps I should kill you now and seal my fate.

MENTAL MONK
I was willing to die with them. Yes, to lead them to their rightful place.
It is God’s wish that these sinners be sacrificed. Only then can their souls be saved.

ARTHUR
Then I shall grant His wish.
(to KNIGHTS) Wall them back up.

TRISTAN

[CERDIC PACES THROUGH]

BRITISH SCOUT (striding to keep up)
I found tracks coming from the south, but none going back.
Horsemen, traveling light and fast.
Could be Roman cavalry. Could be knights.

CERDIC (stopping)
They know we’re after them.

BRITISH SCOUT
They’ll head east now. Through the mountains.

[EVERONE GETS OFF THEIR HORSE AND STARTS TO SLOWLY LEAD THEIR HORSES AND PEOPLE ACROSS THE ICE]
[SOUNDS OF ICE CRACKING BELOW THEIR FEET]
[HORSES ARE FRIGHTENED; THEY PRESS ONWARD]

[SAXON DRUMS ARE VERY NEAR. KNIGHTS LOOK AT ANOTHER]
[GUINEVERE GETS OFF OF HER CARRIAGE]
[ARTHUR TURNS AROUND TO FACE HIS KNIGHTS]

Well I’m tired of running.
And these Saxons are so close behind, my ass is hurting.

TRISTAN

[DAGONET SMIRKS]

[TRISTAN AND BORS LAUNCH ARROWS, WHICH PIERCE A FEW SAXON SOLDIERS AND THEY DIE]
[ARTHUR RAISES HIS EYEBROWS AT GUINEVERE]
[GUINEVERE GLARES BACK AT ARTHUR]
[CYNRIC, ANGRY, STARTS MARCHING ONTO THE ICE]

[SAXONS MARCH ACROSS THE ICE]
[KNIGHTS DRAW THEIR BOWS]

[SAXONS NEAR THE EDGES, SEEING THE PATTERN TO THE ARROWS, START TO CLUSTER]

(realizing what’s going on) Hold the ranks!

SAXON COMMANDER

[SAXONS KEEP MARCHING, BUT THE ICE IS NOT CRACKING]

[KNIGHTS PICK UP THEIR WEAPONS, READY TO FIGHT]

[KNIGHTS GO BACK TO ARROWS]

[DAGONET STARTS HACKING THE ICE SO IT CRACKS]

CYNRIC (pushing more archers forward)

[DAGONET HACKS AT THE ICE SOME MORE, ICE STARTS TO BREAK]

BRITISH SCOUT
The ice is breaking!

(approaches BISHOP and gives him very little breathing room)

[LANCELOT GRABS THE PAPERS FROM THE BOX AND GIVES THEM OUT TO EACH KNIGHT]

BISHOP

[EACH KNIGHT ACCEPTS IT EXCEPT BORS, WHO STARES BLANKLY]

(holding up two papers) For Dagonet.

[DOORS SQUEAK OPEN AND ARTHUR, WITH EXCALIBUR DRAWN, AND CERDIC MEET]

CERDIC
Arthur. Wherever I go on this wretched island, I hear your name.

(ARTHUR circles around CERDIC)

[ARTHUR KEEPS CIRCLING AROUND CERDIC]

[HORSE NEIGHS AND ARTHUR POINTS EXCALIBUR AT CERDIC]

ARTHUR
I came to see your face, so that I alone may find you on the battlefield, and it would be good for you if you marked my face, Saxon.
For the next time you see it, it will be the last thing you see on this earth.

[ARTHUR TAKES ONE MORE LOOK THEN RIDES BACK TO THE WALL]

CERDIC (murmuring)
Finally. A man worth killing.

[CERDIC POUNDS HIS CHEST AND STRETCHES, THEN WALKS OVER TO A COMMANDER, TAKES HIS FOOD, AND STARTS EATING IT]

CERDIC
Prepare the men for battle.

[SAXONS BEGIN GROUPING AND BEATING ON THEIR DRUMS]


[FROM ACROSS THE WALL, THE HORSES BEGIN TO NICKER AND TURN AROUND]

BORS
(softly) Whoa.

[GAWAIN, GALAHAD, TRISTAN, AND LANCELOT ATTEMPT TO CALM THEIR STEEDS. THE HORSES TURN AROUND, BACK TO THE WALL]

LANCELOT
Sshh. (strokes his horse, slowing as he hears the drums)

[LANCELOT LOOKS AT BORS, THEN GAWAIN AND GALAHAD, THEN TRISTAN.]

TRISTAN
Hey. (clicks tongue) You're free. (raises arm; hawk flies off)

[BORS LOOKS BACK AT HIS LOVER AND BASTARD CHILDREN; A CHILD WAVES SADLY]
[LANELOT NODS. THE KNIGHTS BEGIN TO SMILE – GALAHAD IS GRINNING]
[TRISTAN TAKES A BOW AND DRAWS BACK THE STRING]

[SHOT OF ARTHUR RIDING UP THE HILL. LANCELTO JOINS HIM]
[THE TWO SMILE]
[THE REST OF THE KNIGHTS JOIN THEM ON THE HILL, BEARING ROMAN STANDARDS]

He's got a plan, this Roman.
(to CYNRIC) Send what's left of your infantry.

CYNRIC
(warily) You want to kill my men?

CERDIC

[DISBELIEVINGLY, CYNRIC NODS AT ONE OF HIS CAPTAINS]

SAXON

[CYNRIC STARTS TO JOIN HIS MEN, BUR CERDIC STOPS HIM]

[SAXONS MARCH, AMID CRIES FOR “SAXON”]

[DOORS CREAK OPEN, A SINGLE SOLDIER STAGGERS OUT, THEN DIES A FEW STEPS WALKING OUT]

(to CYNRIC) You go with him.

[THEY MARCH]
[LOTS OF WAR CHANTING AND DRUMS]
[MERLIN ARRIVES WITH FLAMING CATAPULTS!]
[WOADS LAUNCH FIRE ARROW SHOWER, THEN CHARGE INTO BATTLE]
[LOADS MORE FIGHTING]

[CERDIC AND TRISTAN SQUARE OFF. TRISTAN DIES]
[GUINEVERE AND CYNRIC FIGHT. GUINEVERE FALLS]
[LANCELOT LOOKS FROM ARTHUR TO GUINEVERE AND THEN RUSHES TO GUINEVERE’S AID]
[LANCELOT AND CYNRIC FIGHT. LANCELTO THEN FIGHTS SOME OTHER RANDOMLY ATTACKING SAXON]
[CYNRIC FLIPS OVER A BODY AND OBTAINS A CROSSBOW]
[LANCELOT TURNS AROUND AND IS SHOT WITH A CROSSBOW; GUINEVERE LOOKS IN HORROR]
[LANCELOT THROWS HIS WEAPON AND KILLS CYNRIC BEFORE KNEELING OVER, ONE HAND GOING TO HIS CHEST]
[GUINEVERE RUNS TO HIM]
[LANCELOT IS MOUTHING SOMETHING]

[ARTHUR AND CERDIC SQUARE OFF]
[ARTHUR FAKES GETTING HURT, THEN STABS CERDIC]

CERDIC
(hair being grabbed by ARTHUR, whispering) Arthur...

[CERDIC DIES]

[ARTHUR SEES GUINEVERE FALL TO HER KNEES BY LANCELOT’S BODY]
[LANCELOT’S HORSE IS STANDING OVER LANCELOT]
[ARTHUR RUNS OVER AND FALLS TO HIS KNEES; HE TOSSES ASIDE HIS HELMET]

ARTHUR
(to God) It was my life to be taken! Not this! Never this!

[BORS CARRIES TRISTAN'S BODY TO ARTHUR]
[GALAHAD AND GAWAIN FOLLOW, SOBMERLY]

ARTHUR
(tearfully) My brave knights, I have failed you.
I neither took you off this island, nor shared your fate.


 

[GALAHAD HANDS ARTHUR THE TORCH, AND ARTHUR PLACES IT TO LIGHT LANCELOT’S BODY]
[LANCELOT BURNS]

LANCELOT (voiceover)
For two hundred years knights have fought and died for a land not our own.
But on that day at Badon Hill, all who fought put their lives in service of a greater cause: freedom.



[MERLIN HOLDS OUT A GOBLET AND WALKS THROUGH A ROW OF TORCH-BEARING WOADS TO ARTHUR AND GUINEVERE]
[GUINEVERE RAISES THE GOBLET TO HER MOUTH AND DRINKS]
[SHE PASSES THE GOBLET TO ARTHUR]
[ARTHUR RAISES THE GOBLET TO HIS LIPS AND DRINKS, WHILE LOOKING SOLEMNLY AT GUINEVERE]
[BOTH LOOK AT MERLIN]

MERLIN
Arthur. Guinevere.
Our people are one...(nods slightly)...as you are.

[ARTHUR AND GUINEVERE KISS]
[CROWD CHEERS]

BORS
(holding up one of his bastard babies] Now I'm really going to have to marry your mother.

VANORA
(reaching for the baby) Who said I'd have you?

MERLIN
(still holding torch loftily) King Arthur!

EVERYONE
Hail Arthur!

[MERLIN KNEES]
[EVERYONE FOLLOWS SUIT]

ARTHUR
Let every man, woman, child bear witness that from this day, all Britons will be united in one common cause.
(thrusts Excalibur toward the sky)

EVERYONE
(thrusting his/her fists in the air]

BORS (drawing sword)
ARTORIUS! (salutes ARTHUR with his sword)

[GAWAIN AND GALAHAD ALSO SALUTE ARTHUR WITH THEIR SWORDS]
[GUINEVERE LATCHES HER ARM TO EXCALIBUR SO BOTH SHE AND ARTHUR ARE HOLDING IT]
[THEY SIGNAL TO THE WOADS; WOADS FIRE FLAMING ARROWS ACROSS INTO A WATER SOURCE]




[SCENE TRANSITIONS TO THREE HORSES, TWO DARK AND ONE WHITE, GALLOPING ACROSS THE HILLS]

VOICEOVER (LANCELOT)
And as for the knights who gave their lives, their deaths were caused for neither mourning nor sadness.
For they live forever, their names and deeds handed down from father to son, mother to daughter, in the legends of King Arthur and his knights.
