The Legend of King Arthur, his Knights and Camelot have been around for over eight hundred years. The stories of Arthur first appear in British literature during the Middle Ages. Factual sources are scarce as very little was recorded in what was supposedly the time of Arthur and Camelot. A small amount of archaeological evidence seems to support that the legend may have originated from tales of a war lard who lived much earlier in the Dark Ages. King Arthur features in a number of Welsh poems as well. No matter what any of us believe, the complex tales of Arthur and his Knights grew in renown between AD 600 and AD1100. We may never know the truth about Arthur, however one thing is certain. He is the most prominent figure in all of European history to date. I cannot quench my thirst for the romantic tales yet the factual possibilities will always fascinate me. From all that I have learned thus far, I know it is highly unlikely that Camelot really ever existed. Not to mention many of the deeds and characters written in the tales. I believe that Arthur was a great warlord, possibly a Roman officer, who lead the people of Britain to freedom and peace in the Dark Ages. Most likely leading his men to victory at the Battle of Baden Hill around 516 AD. Although the 2004 film King Arthur had many historical inaccuracies, I think it is the closest representation on film of the true times of Arthur, or Artorius. I am not an expert in Medieval or Dark Age History, simply a fan of the Legends of King Arthur. Below you will find listings of my favorite books, films and websites regarding King Arthur.
